Allometry is the science studying the differential growth rates of the parts of a living organism's body part or process.
A large number of characteristics have been shown to vary with body size. These underlying relationships are not clearly understood but we know for example that in mammals, those with large bodies grow more slowly, mature later, have fewer offspring, longer gestation periods, and live longer than do small species. These relationships remain correlated with each other among deviations from the allometric lines.
