The term acidemia describes the state of low blood pH, while acidosis is used to describe the processes leading to these states. Nevertheless, physicians sometimes use the terms interchangeably.
Acidemia in pregnancy
Edit
Mellanby and Lawrence (2008) reported a significant association between acidemia at birth and subsequent cognitive performance. in a retrospective cohort study correlating birth and arterial pH data with childhood tests for non-verbal intelligence, grammar comprehension and literacy. they found that arterial pH was significantly negatively correlated with literacy (p = 0.001) and with non-verbal intelligence (p = 0.033).
